A More Important Question About Parables

1/7/2007

speech bubble representing person 2 talking I am wondering why it is that Jesus spoke in parables?

speech bubble representing person 5 talkingThe disciples asked that too, but for now there might be a more important question to ask. That question would be, “Do we have the eyes to see what He is saying in the parables?” Jesus answered that the reason He spoke in parables had to do with fulfilling prophesy. But more important is what He was saying to them. He told them, “The knowledge of the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven has been given to you.”

When His disciples asked, “What does this parable mean?” He pulled them aside and explained the parable to them. What seems to be a more important question to ask is, “What does the parable mean to me?” and not, “Why do you speak in parables?”

Jesus has come to dwell inside of us by His Spirit. His Word is living and active so we can ask Him to draw us aside and explain to us the meaning of these parables. “Lord, open the eyes of my heart to see what You mean by this.” “What does this parable mean?”
